Default Should we take him to emergency or vet?

Hi all. Our dog Jackson is about 3 yrs old and always has been in perfect health. Tonight we noticed while sleeping that his breathing was pretty shallow and fast at times. I woke him up and he seems relatively alert and breathing fine when he is up. He played with me and ate some peanut butter off my finger. He ran up and down the stairs a couple of times. He seemed fine. Then he went back to sleep on my lap and he seems to be breathing shallow and fast again.

Are we being paranoid? I wouldn't say he's not getting air. It just seemed to be a different kind of breathing than he normally does.

We're now planning to work him into the vet tomorrow if possible. Do you think that's good enough? Or should we take him tonight?

I'm jacksonsmama's husband by the way.

Thanks for the help.
