Your story certainly made me laugh! Our story is similar. My husband and I are both retired.
After our Jack Russell passed away last summer we told each other that we would have no more dogs. Over the years we lost so many dear dogs, a cat and even a horse.
But now we have our little Yorkie and he is like no pet we have ever had before! By the way, he has plenty of outfits and it is my husband that picked them out. He has a beautiful shearling coat, a raincoat, and even a Yankee shirt for cool summer evenings. Our favorite is his FBI fleece shirt. He causes quite a stir wherever we go.
As far as housebreaking, I found that taking the pup out many many times during the day, after he ate, played, woke up from a nap, etc., helped do the trick. We both dressed up in our foul weather gear and braved the elements. He goes to sleep in his crate next to our bed, covered with a light towel, and he sleeps through the night with no problem.
Remi goes everywhere with us. He has been to weddings, funerals, birthday parties and barbecues.
We know you will enjoy your new baby as much as we do. In fact, our opinion is that you actually need to be retired in order to give our Yorkie the full attention he deserves!
I too am a survivor and can relate well to your wife. My husband walks with a cane so I do most of the care, although when I am not a home he manages very well.
Best regards,
