if its really bad you will be able to smell it. i had a rescue growing up that had a bad anal gland problem and we could smell when they were acting up from a mile away!!!
it is a fishy smell and sometimes there is a discharge.
if it hasent gotten to the point where you can smell it, sometimes around the bum, it can look swollen. the best bet is to take them to a vet to check though.
