That is what worked for us. I just rang them and asked him if he wanted to go out as we were going out. He was able to pick it up from just that.

You can also try rewarding him. You put him in front of the bells and if he touches them (even with help) or gets them to ring, give him a treat, say the command and take him out.
He"ll catch on.

That is funny, your cat is bell trained. They are so smart.
