You are so lucky that your mom heard that! If people would just teach their kids some respect - no one should ever try to pet a dog in it's yard without permission! If they ever come around again, I would follow them home and talk to their parents. We had an incident around here where a rottweiler bit two girls on seperate occasions, AFTER they had been told not to try to pet it. It was in it's own yard and they were petting it on a dare. The parents wanted to make the owners have it put to sleep, but they couldn't! Sadly, the owners had to give the dog to other family members because of the uproar. Neither they or the dog had done anything wrong, it was the young girls fault on both occasions, they figured they didn't have to follow the rules and then their parents stuck up for them and blamed the poor dog for their recklessness and stupidity!
