He needs to go out every hour if you are going to let him roam. You also need to know his schedule, like if he always poops after dinner you can't let him run around until after he does.

Have you tried a bell? Sometimes they don't know how to tell us they need to go out, especially if you are upstairs.

If you are crate training him you can let him out every 2 hours but he needs to be in the crate for the last half of that time.

He should get trained pretty quickly. Sammy was 10 months when we got her and NOT trained and it took about 6 months for her to catch on. We got Loki as a puppy and he was trained by about 10 months.
