Yes, some birds are large enough to pick up a larger yorkie. I know of an adult cat that was taken by a hawk before. These birds have very long, extremely sharp claws that they sink into the animal and pick them up. I suppose some dogs might try to bite, although I don't think they'd be able to reach their head around to bite...most would be in shock from the punctures or even killed.
