It's not that painful for them. Not any worse than a shot. I always hold my puppies for the vet when she does it. Actually, I don't even have to hold them. Just scratch their heads and they don't even act like they notice it.
Every one of my dogs is microchipped and every puppy is before they leave. Not something I will leave up to the new owners.
