Your question is completely valid, NOT dumb
I started off with the smallest travel crate and put a blanket in the back - no room to pee or poo anywhere! After a few weeks, they need more room. After the travel crate training, I changed to an x-pen in my living room but some people also use the cages. I think both are great. Good luck with your training.
