I had read this article over a year ago when trying to determine the best time for spaying Ruby. Because of my baseless fears in general about spaying because of her size at that time, decided to wait until after her first heat.
Reno's breeder neuters all pets before placement at around 14 weeks. I was a little uncomfortable with this but did understand why she chooses to do so. I would too if I were to ever breed, even given the slight risk of any adverse affects.
There seems to be risks for certain types of cancers in either case, early vs. maturity neutering. And, with the bone development only being an issue for "canine athletes", the benefits far outweigh the risks, IMO.
