I don't know if this is an option for you but when Simon learned how to crawl out of his ex-pen space I started leaving them in my bedroom with the door closed during the day. They have stairs up to the bed, food and water, pad, tv is on and some toys to play with.
I come home at lunch too so they just sleep when I'm gone
