I asked my vet about it and he said personally it was done early by rescues and some breeders. He said it's done but he is not comfortable with it. He likes to wait until the pup has finished a good bit of growing as some hormones are necessary for their well being. He definitely recommends before the first heat but likes to go closer to 7 or so months. Another reason is because he wants the adult teeth to erupt so if any babies need removing it can be done at once.

He did mention that there is a study going on about too early spay/neuters and the adverse effects.
