I didn't place a deposit when I bought Oliver, but I gladly would have had the breeder asked for one. It not only ensures that you'll be coming to pick up the dog, but it also can give you a feeling of ease knowing that the dog is now yours and the breeder can't turn around and not give him to you.

I personally wouldn't put a deposit on a dog I had never seen, though. I'd be much more comfortable buying from a local breeder where you can see both the conditions the puppy is living in as well as the parents. The parents provide great clues as to how your puppy might look and act as it ages and it's good to know that he's being cared for in a good environment rather than in a barn.
