Thank you everyone for your advice.
Duke is 4 1/2 months now. He's been doing better. My friend trained her chi/pom to stay and not follow her when she leaves the house, I might try that. But it sounds like it's better to keep in section off when I'm gone. I come home for lunch everyday so he is alone no more than 5 hours a day.
I thought about buying this for him, it would fit his food/water, bed, pad and small space left to play.
