I think it's extremely important to register your dog. First, it doesn't cost very much, under $30.00, and if you have a microchip, you can register that # as well.
Many breeders will claim that the dogs they are selling are AKC eligible. They will ask the buyer, "Why register if you're not going to show?" However, if the buyer goes ahead and tries to register, they find out that the seller's dogs were never eligible. I've read about this happening so many times. In other words, it helps keeps sellers honest. Just because a breeder is selling the puppies of two registered dogs, it does not mean the puppies are automatically eligible; they have to meet other requirements.
AKC may not be perfect, but it the best thing going, and registering your dog supports the AKC. Also, with the future of DNA testing we may be able to isolate some of the genes responsible for heredity problems. Your dog's linage is important in predicting future health problems. It's not a status thing!!!! I'm hoping in the future the AKC can help put unethical breeders out of business. |
