Until I had my Yorkies well that and a Maltese when I was a Kid I had never owned any Small dogs. We had Golden Retrievers and all big dogs like that. They all were inside dogs.. they did go out but they could come in when ever they wanted..
the next door neighbor had 21 siberian Huskies they all were indoor/outdoor. Yes all 21 I helped take care of them they were show dogs.. her house was Spotless too.
