I've ownded 3 Maltese and I have 3 Yorkies now! The Maltese seem to be more "yappy" (barkers) and seem to require a bit more attention. Also keep in mind, their hair is much harder to maintain! And you often have lots of white hair everywhere, even though they "don't shed."
Now...could be just my luck, but one Maltese has severe anxiety issues, my second Maltese was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at the age of 1 and the
3rd one I got was already over a year old and had some bad habits and also showed signs of anxiety.
So based on MY experience, Yorkies fit my family a little better, though Maltese are gorgeous and loving lapdogs ;-)
