catching them in the act and "correcting" them is as simple as saying "no" in a stern voice (no need to yell) and stopping them by lifting them up and putting them where you want them to go and if they finish their business in the correct spot give lots and lots of praise. You have to show them that they're doing something wrong by telling them "no" sternly and then you have to show them what you want them to. This is why it's so important to watch them like a hawk so that you can catch them in the act and "correct" it immediately. They learn very fast with repetition and consistency. I crate trained all of my dogs which I highly recommend and they're all potty trained to go outside.
