If you fold the pads dirty sides in (I usually fold them in fourths) the smell seems to be contained really well. I just stack them next to the washer until I am ready to wash. You can also spray the dirty spots if you like with Odo Ban or vinegar water if it seems to be extreme. But as long as they stay folded I really don't have any problem with the smell. Another option is to put them in a garbage bag with a twist tie.
