I asked a groomer once. You tilt their head down so the water runs down their nose not up it. This helps keep the water out of the ears too, If you have to, you can hold the hair under the chin to do this. (Poor baby I know)
I also keep a dry wash cloth handy to wipe their face after I rinse so they can see and feel better right away!
