I imagine it would be very hard to keep them apart. I got very lucky with my Lola in that with her first heat cycle at 8 months old she would not let Joe anywhere near her. She would flat out snap at him for even trying. She ended up having a false pregnancy too. She felt like she was filling with milk, and stayed swollen down there for a long time. For awhile I was afraid that the snuck in a breeding, but they didnt. So you may have gotten lucky.
Its so hard to keep male dogs away when a girl is in heat. At least a big neighbor dog didnt break in your back yard and get to her!
