Well worms ARE very serious and if they go untreated, they could cause a lot of harm. What I meant was that worms are very common and very easily treated. I wouldn't suggest buying a wormer from Petco. Most commercial brands can't treat all worms and you only want to treat the worms that are present. A fecal test will tell you what worms are present in his system and the vet can give you a medicine especially for them.
If you're concerned about your lab, I'd do another fecal sample in a couple of weeks. If he tests negative for them, then he doesn't have worms! If he does, then you can treat him.
Some worms can be passes from dogs to humans but it's rare and can be prevented by practicing good hygiene.. like washing your hands after handling feces, washing your hands after playing with the dog, before eating, etc.
