I always wonder about this too. I usually take Gus where ever I go, but if can't take him I will leave him here with my husaband or oldest daughter. And they tell me that he just lays there on the couch or close to the door waiting for me to come home. I wonder if it's the same when the whole family goes somewhere he can't go. I know that when we are home he has to be where ever I am.
