Default Xpen, Crating/Kenneling questions

Hi all, I'm new here. I am Rachel from Alaska. I'm sure there are posts about this, but I have weeded through oh so many and even tried to use the search option, so please bear with me for this one.

I am going to be getting my yorkie at the end of March. I would like to be able to have him in my room at night when I'm sleeping in case he needs to get up and go, but also would like to be able to have a place for him in the kitchen area for when we are home.

My problem is that the kitchen is linoleum and my bedroom is carpet. I like the idea of him having an xpen type of set-up with a kennel/crate to sleep in, inside the xpen. However I am worried about what I will put underneath the xpen in my room?

I know there are varying opinions on using pads versus going outside, I plan to do both until he can get a little older and hold it longer, but in the mean time would have a puppy pad only in the xpen area.

Ideas, suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
