I have a very open floor plan. My kitchen, laundry room, living room, dining room and staircase are all one big room. When we remodeled the painter suggested using the same color throughout. But he used a glossy in the kitchen and laundry room and a flat paint in the rest. This gives it a look of continuity, but also "breaks up" the room into different sections. The color we used is hard to describe...a light tan with a touch of gold.

Does that make any sense?
