Personal preference.
It isn't so much that I think dogs need grains, it is that I don't like the thought of overfeeding protein. And I know a wolf's diet is almost all protein but they also eat things like bone and wild mice, so I don't try to feed a wolf's diet to Ellie. I do not believe that high protein has ever been shown to cause kidney problems but I am on the fence about the whole thing until I know high protein isn't causing other problems.
