I'd do what you are doing.

I have heard that dogs have no concept of time but from persoanl experience, it is not true. When Ellie stays alone for a couple hours she is VERY excited to see me but when she stays alone for 10 or 12 hours (very rarely) she is so overcome with seeing me that she acts like she will burst, so I think they do understand time.
