I had to teach Tia how to go up and down the stairs in my home...especially how to come down. our stairs are dark hardwood, so I figured with her it was a mix of fear and trouble with depth perception and distinguishing how far down to step. I would get down to her level, gently tap the step she was on, and move my hand down to the next step and tap gently on it to help her "see" how far down it was (and she was tiny back then!) Treats also helped her pluck up her courage.

Now Tia is a pro and understands the words "upstairs" (she'll run up to the landing then turn back to me with a look on her face that says "aren't you coming up too?") and "downstairs".
