One could say that each dog is individual and deserves a unique name. To me, I think that's a real personal decision. I know that my mom's dog is named after our original Shelly, the best little dog we ever had. It it brings you comfort, I see nothing wrong with it. There are lots of people who name their dog Rex2 or Jake II.
