I am not surprised that you have had a struggle. Oh my! Five weeks is very young!
Was he even weaned yet? I am so sorry that you have had to go through the resulting problems.
From the research I have done, I know that knowledgeable breeders won't adopt out puppies until they are around 12-14 weeks old. Those weeks were important ones where his mom and littermates could have taught him a lot of good things.
You will need to work hard on socialization. Probably harder than most new puppy parents.
