I think a contract is a good idea. We bought Brody from a breeder in Choctaw and we did sign some kind of contract. She gave us 3 days to take him to the vet. If you don't want people to breed your puppies, you can add that to the contract as well. You can pretty much put anything in your contract. I don't know anything about contract law, but if somebody signs something, they are more or less responsible for what they signed. So even though we don't have very many laws, a contract is a good way to make your own rules.

Oklahoma dog laws are outrageous!!! We live in the country and we run into so many dog problems. For example, if a dog is on your property, animal control will not come remove the dog from your property. They say you live with it or you shoot it!!! That's what they told us! Even if the animal is aggressive, they said they won't deal with it - you just have to shoot it.

We also found recently that a friend of ours has neighbors who pretty much run a pitbull puppy mill. They keep their dogs on chains all day and the dogs can get within about 2 feet of each other, but no closer. So they bark all day and night. When our friends went to talk to them about the noise and about a pitbull who continues to come onto their property, they said that they only have their dogs for breeding. Our friends said that the female is constantly pregnant and is not kept in very good conditions. No wonder pitbulls become so mean! Our friends aren't comfortable with roaming pitbulls, especially ones who are usually kept on chains. I'm upset with the fact that they are running a puppy mill. Guess what animal control said when they called about these dogs: shoot them!! I couldn't believe it.

Furthermore, I suspect one of my neighbors might be abusing their puppy. Their dog keeps coming onto our property, and its a small, harmless dog but likes to play/fight with Brody, so we take the dog back over to the neighbors. Well, I suspected that the dog might be abused because he spends most of his day at our house. Then when my brother took him home this weekend, my sister in law said that the people kicked their dog 4 times (for escaping from the property maybe?) Then I could hear my brother leaving their house and a couple of seconds later, I heard the puppy cry for at least 30 seconds - I am suspecting that they were beating him. It was horrible. However, I know with Oklahoma laws, as long as these people are feeding and giving water to their dog (which they are), the law does nothing to protect the dogs. It horrible!!! I am never taking the puppy back over to their house again. I want to steal him and take care of him myself, but for that, I would probably get in trouble. Isn't that dumb?

Sorry for the ranting but I am starting to get so annoyed with the laws in Oklahoma concerning dogs.
