Yesterday morning I was in bed with a horrific migraine. I had ear plugs in and put them on my headboard when my daughter brought Mariah onto the bed to say “hi”. Our puppy ran to the ear plugs and before I could stop her, grabbed one in her mouth. I pried her mouth open and almost got it when she pulled away from me. When I immediately grabbed her again – it was GONE! She had SWALLOWED it!
My heart just stopped. I thought for sure she would start choking but she continued running around like nothing had happened. I immediately called the vet in a panic. I was literally shaking!
They were so kind and matter of fact. They said it happens ALL THE TIME!?!

I was shocked. They said that for some reason dogs like the smell/taste of ear wax, especially if it is someone they are close to. I explained that my biggest concern is because she is so young/small. I can’t believe that she didn’t choke on that ear plug and I was so worried about what it would do to her now that she swallowed it. They said the best thing is to keep a close watch on her for the next couple of days. They thought it was very likely that she would either throw it up or pass it. They said to call/bring her in immediately if she began throwing up constantly, if she stopped eating/drinking or stopped peeing/pooping. They wanted to give her a chance to expel it before they considered surgery.
Well she continued acting completely normal…she played, ate/drank, keeping peeing/pooping. I was still sooo worried.
I kept checking on her all night long but she was fine. Then sometime in the early morning she threw it up! When I got up early this morning to check on her…there it was laying next to her food dish. It was completely intact…a little longer/thinner and brown instead of green but intact! We’re still going to keep a really close watch on her in case it hurt her in some way….
What a scary incident! We’ve tried to be sooo careful. We completely puppy proofed all the rooms she’s been allowed in. We’ve kept her contained when we couldn’t completely watch her…and still…in a split second an accident can happen. I’m so greatful she’s ok!
