When my DH and I moved into our first house in '96, we bought a Kirby from a young door to door salesman. I still use it today for the basement in our new house.(This house has central vac)
I do agree that the ones at Wal Mart (Bisell , etc) are just as good and half the price although I am not sure they would last half as long as the kirby.JMO
