We had great success with potty training. It was a lot of work - but well worth it. It took us exactly two months to get it done. We trained her to hit a bell when she needs to go outside.
1st - section off the family room and lay down a bunch of blankets (wash the blankets everytime after an accident to remove the odor)
2nd - watch her every second - do not take your eyes off. If you can't watch her - put her in a crate. (the tv was on - but all eyes were on Bailey)
3rd - catch her in the act and scoop 'er up immediately
4th - say "outside" - and simultaneously hit the bell*
5th - while outside - say "go potty" - then praise when she actually pee's.
6th - treat when she comes back in.
She learned to pee on command rather quickly - but telling us she needed to go outside took some time.
*Bell - we taught Bailey to hit the bell (small service bell placed on the floor) when she needs to potty. I didn't want her to learn to whine or bark - plus all friends and family think its hilarious!! |
