It's been suggested that the crate be put on your bedside table so that the puppy can see you and you can reach over, and put your fingers through the gate. I put mine in his crate and put the crate on our bed. We have a king-size bed so there was plenty of room. After I figured out what his schedule was I let him curl up with me and set my alarm for 4 hrs. (at night, that is). During the day it is: eat, piddle, play 15 min., piddle, sleep, piddle. Makes for a busy, busy time.
Good luck.
