I also use a pee pad inside a litter box and my little boys knows to go to his box to leave his pee and poo behind there. He has a litter box upstairs near the kitchen and one downstairs in the hallway near the bedrooms. A lot of the times if he pee'd in one, he will poo in the other. I use the pee pads from Nature's Miracle which is suppose to have a grass scent so it won't be such a weird transition if I need to him to go outside. I take the pee pads when I take him to visit other's people's houses.
