I am just speechless. I didn't get a chance to read through this thread but the cut reminds me of him possibly getting sliced from a wire fence.
I hope that made some sense. It's about 2 AM and I definately need sleep. When I first looked at the picture it reminded me of a neighbors doggie a few years back. He was obsessed with a horse farm that was down the road and would always dig to go under the fence. One time he wasn't so lucky and got caught under the wire and got sliced pretty bad. He ended up being ok after a good bit a healing but your pictures reminded me of him so much. I'm so sorry about Rusty. I hope he feels better real soon. I know he must be in pain and having to see him that way I'm sure is very difficult. Hugs to all of you and a special kiss to Rusty.
