I think it sounds like a good idea. If you are gone all day and he is in a crate he will not be able to hold it that long. A pen is definitely better. You may want to evenually change to a larger pen, though as he gets bigger. Also be sure he can't climb out of it and hurt himself and don't leave a collar on him, so he doesn't get it caught.
