We have wire crates that our guys sleep in and plastic crates that they travel in...that way they have more room for when they sleep since they are in a longer period of time but when traveling they are cozy and more confided. This is what works best for us. I also made crate covers for all of our wire crates so that it is not drafty or cold but keeps them warm and dark at night!!
I think you need do what is best for you and your little guy!!
