What a scary story! I am so glad you and Louis are okay!
I had a loose dog come after Lady a few years ago. It came up behind us so I didn't realize he was there until it was too late. I dove to protect her and fractured my pelvis in the process, but she was okay.
I got pepper spray for dogs, called Muzzle, and tell everyone I know to carry it now. Just picking up your dog or spraying the dog with citronella spray will not stop an attack. As you found out, often an attacking dog will turn on you.
