I put the crate closer to my bed (I put it on a foot rest next to me). I don't take her out at the first whine because then she knows if she cries she gets it her way... But this way she at least then hears me breathing and knows I am close. If she wakes me up in the middle of the night, all I have to do is put my hand on the crate door and let her smell it to calm her down... If she cries for longer than 20 minutes, I know she has to go out...

We have done this from the start and it has worked great for us.
