Every evening I use a slicker brush to comb my Yorkies' hair (also brush their teeth). It just is a routine. That way I avoid the mats. It is also best to not brush the hair when it is dry. I use Ice on Ice spray before I brush my Yorkies or comb my Pommie. There are threads on YT that address this very issue if you do a "search." I don't claim to be an expert.
