I believe firmly in Micro Chipping... we had Ava's done at a VIP vet clinic that was recomended through the AKC website. They didn't put her under for it, and she barley even made a peep, and ran around just fine. But if she was at the age to get spayed i would just have it done then. we paid 20.00 and they included her first year of service as well as the chip.
