Just wanted to give you some thoughts on how microchipping has worked out for us. We own Southeast Texas Yorkies and we microchip every dog produced in our kennel and all of our breeding stock. We use the home again system, which I am very pleased with. As a breeder, we also keep perpetual records of all microchip numbers as a way of identifying all of our dogs down the road if need be. I implant the chips around 6 wks of age. We have never had any dog exhibit adverse reactions from the injection site or chip itself. We have nothing but good things to say about the chips, be it home again, akc, etc.... It is an excellent way for breeders to keep good solid records and it also gives peace of mind to new owners. Having been through a hurricane evacuation in the last 6 years, I can tell you that these type of devices are a life saver in bad situations. Lots of pets were lost due to unfamiliar surroundings. Generally, our first thought as pet owners is to microchip due to theft; however, many more pets than most realize become disoriented with their surroundings and can't find their way home (say if they journey to another part of your street, vacation, natural disaster, etc...) These devices give the average joe, who would otherwise not know what to do with this "stray" on their door step, a way to contact the owner. As I am always the "alternate" contact for my buyer's registration if possible, I've seen it work a time or two....
