You can use the bendryl ( or the generic) or 1/4 of a motion sickness tablet. I use the generic ones from Wal-Mart and it works great. We travel back and forth to Canada which is a 12 hour ride. I have a bichon and give her 1/4 tablet the night before we leave and then 1/4 tablet in the morning...and no food just a bit of water. I also found with her if she was in her crate, she'd get sick. If she rides in her car seat, she is fine.
