Trust me, I understand it can be hard getting to know a breeder, I have tried to help people and have been burnt and almost every breeder has been thru it, thats why we have our guards up. I have also helped people and have been blessed.
I believe you have good intentions and with patience and persistance you will find what you are looking for.
There should be a lot of shows in your area that you can go to and start mingling. Also I wouldn't completely rule out a breeder in another state.
But do your homework and visit the YTCA.Org to give you some contacts and don't limit yourself to just trying to get to know one breeder. Look at the type of Yorkie you like and then build a relationship with the breeder. If the breeder won't allow you to get to know them at all, then thats not the breeder for you.
