As you've found out, puppy shopping blindly on the internet is a bad idea.
definitely check into the YTCA breeders...they should be ethical. I'm not planning to get another puppy for three years and had planned to start talking to breeders about a year ahead of time. However, the more I learn the more cautious I feel I need to be. I've decided I'm going to start talking to breeders now...I think it may take me three years to fully feel comfortable buying a puppy from someone.

I'm not expecting you to wait three year but you might need to wait a few months to get a puppy from a reputable breeder. Find a breeder you like first...if they have pups now, great...but if they dont, why not wait until they have a litter? I understand it stinks to wait (believe me, I want one NOW but have already waited two years and will wait another three) but it's better to be patient and buy from a reputable breeder than settle for a puppy just because a less-than-desirable breeder has one right now
