My little guy got out of his crate once (it wasn't closed properly) and ate through his gate once. Both times he had the run of the house for a few hours. Both times he shocked the hell out of me by actually going on his pad and not messing up the house. This was after a week of having him.
Pretty soon I am hoping i can leave him out as it seems like he holds it now to go outside.
