Hi
The smell will probably last until the next bath or until you use a scented coat preparation. Just smooth it on the dog's back, avoid the face. If you use a pin brush you could press it through the pins and brush the dog with it held in place. It's clearly not safe if ingested, as mentioned above, but I've been doing it for several years now without problems.
Has a tendency to stop them playing with the sheets - must remind them too much of grooming time
