An ex's family got a small scale infestation in their Manhattan apt. It was a HUGE undertaking to get them out of one room for good. I most city folk are VERY leery of taking any cushioned item that may be out of a curb, no matter how they might like the couch.
Another instance was my cousin in Brooklyn had lots of bug bites and thought her slob of a roommate had brought bedbugs into the apt and TOTALLY freaked out and went around the place with bleach only to finally figure out that a window had been left open and it was only mosquito bites.
